Rock 'N' Roll to a CureRecently I’ve been contacted to donate my graphic design services to a very special cause. The Lustgarten Foundation, whose mission is to advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer, is hosting a charity concert event. The event is entitled “Rock ‘N’ Roll to a Cure” and is a whole day event to support the fight against pancreatic cancer. The event will be an all day concert event featuring the Bruce Springsteen Tribute Band Tramps Like Us (http://www.trampslikeus.com/). Here is the information regarding the date/location of the event.

    When: Sunday, June 24, 2012 | 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Where: VFW Center | 50 Waterworks Road | Freehold, NJ 07728

For more information regarding tickets and donations, please visit the event page on the Lusgarten website: http://www.lustgarten.org/Page.aspx?pid=1081 .

As for the poster, the idea was to infuse the elements of a concert “Gig” poster with a purple theme to match the purple pancreatic cancer ribbon. Since the day will be Bruce Springsteen themed, with the tribute band headlining, we wanted to include  a tie back to something themed after the rock legend. The iconic image of him leaning with his guitar was used as a base to create this digital illustration. Combining the purple color with the grungy effect really helped put this design over the edge as a rocking gig poster. Finally, I wanted to create a sort logo/identity for the event. This is where I came up with the “Rock ‘N’ Roll to a Cure” logotype seen at the top of the poster. I think this type treatment really helps brand the event and unify both a great cause and a fun day of music and friends.

This is an awesome project for me to be working on as it is for a great cause and was a whole lot of fun to produce. If you’d like to attend the event or make a donation, please visit the Lustgarten Foundation event site. Cablevision Systems Corporation’s support of the Lustgarten Foundation ensures that 100% of every donation goes to the support of pancreatic cancer research. This is shaping up to be a great event for an even greater cause and I’m glad I could do my part to help!

    Virtual Symposium Poster
In my place of work, there are many educational and informative events held for the faculty, staff, and general University community. As the graphic designer on our team, I am tasked with coming up with the marketing team for these various events. Usually this includes posters, web graphics, and even teaser commercials promoting the event. In this poster I’d like to share 2 recent events that were held by The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center.

Above is a poster for the Virtual Symposium, which was an in person and online event held that discussed methods and techniques for conducting and online or hybrid courses. This included strategies for preparing engaging online content and how to truly engage your students when you aren’t meeting face to face. A winter theme was suggested for the poster so the idea of a laptop in a snowglobe was brainstormed, to suggest the idea of shaking up your current course offerings.

    Faculty Boot Camp

Another event held by The TLTC, is an annual event entitled Faculty Bootcamp, which is held every fall. The object of this workshop is to get faculty members of the University back in the swing of things once the summer has ended. This “Bootcamp” is a series of technology sessions to get faculty reacquainted with the bevy of tools at their disposal, and to teach them a few new tricks. In the past, we’ve always gone with a military/bootcamp theme for the marketing for this event. This year, I had the idea to design the poster to look like a military seal. The idea behind this rugged poster was to make it look like the side of an old WWII fighter plane. The poster was well received and helped to create awareness of the event.

    I'm on a Boat T-Shirt

This past summer my good friend and Colleague, Corey, got married. His wedding took place on a cruise along the Caribbean with his family and friends. To celebrate the occasion, he and his wife decided they wanted to have t-shirts made up for the whole gang! That’s where Truz comes in to help!

To celebrate their wedding cruise, Corey wanted to have t-shirts made that would pay homage to the great Saturday Night Live short, “I’m on a Boat” by The Lonely Island. What greater way to celebrate a beautiful wedding than to scream “I’M ON A BOAT” in the same vain as T-Payne. So we quickly went to the drawing board and came up with some ideas.

We wanted to keep things minimalist and clean, so that they would come out nicely on a printed t-shirt. As well, we wanted them to be subtle enough to fit in with a crowd…but anyone who took the time to read the shirt, would get the joke. The above design is was we came up with and I think it worked out quite nicely. As well you can see a picture of the happy couple wearing their shirts.

    "I'm on a Boat" T-shirt

All in all, this was a really fun project to work on. It was a different change of pace from my usual work, as I don’t often get to design a t-shirt. The shirts came out amazing, and the happy couple was certainly pleased with them! All the best!

Truzweb.com has primarily become a place for me to showcase my graphic design skills. However, I also like to express myself creatively in other ways, specifically with video production. The video below is a piece produced at the TLTC at Seton Hall University, where I currently work as a graphic designer. Yes, that lovely narration is the voice of yours truly! This video was produced over the course of a few days last year, to showcase a new offering from the university. We wanted to display it in the hand crafted style, similar to the folks at Common Craft. It was a lot of fun to put this piece together with my colleague Corey Howell, of Goodguys Productions.

This is just a quick sample of some of the things I do at my job in addition to my graphic design duties. I’ve put together a YouTube playlist of some of the videos I’ve helped produce HERE. As well you can get a taste for some of the fun videos I’ve produced in my personal life at youtube.com/truzweb.

I like to view myself as a sort of renaissance man of the digital age! Design, video, audio, photography and anything to get the creative juices flowing…I’m all in!

Last month I worked with Dominick Bagnato from Living Daylights Pictures for a teaser poster for a film he is currently putting together. The film is entitled “Bramble Hill”; the screenplay is finished and is currently being entered into numerous screenplay festivals. Already the screenplay has been getting good reviews on triggerstreet.com, so Dom felt it was a good point to create a teaser poster for his website to drum up additional interest.  Before we began work, he described the film to me as a psychological thriller in the vein of “Rosemary’s Baby”. Additionally, I was sent a copy of the screenplay with a few passages highlighted, that captured the essence of what he was looking for in the poster. Below is the passage I began to work from:

“As she nears the crest of the hill, the top of a tree comes into sight.

She stops at the top before a towering sycamore tree. The aged tree stands 80 feet tall in front of her. The bark nearest the ground is a visual cacophony of human limbs intertwined in orgy.”

This passage was what I worked with to create the final poster, which is the image featured at the top of this post. However, this wasn’t the original design. The first design that was created featured the title and base of the tree as more of a text based design element. As well, the original contained actual hands rising from the roots and base of the tree. After some discussion, we decided that the hands may have been a bit two extreme, as they gave off the connotation that this was a “zombie movie”. So, for the final design we integrated the hands as roots in the tree, for a more organic look. The new design is much more suggestive and leaves more to the imagination. You can see a comparison between the original and final design below.

    Original vs. Final Design

You can see that in the final the we removed the black bar design element and replaced it with more of an organic hill. There is also more detail in the texture as the surface of the hill has a more grassy and twig covered top. As well, the lower most roots on the tree reach towards the sky, and were designed to resemble outstretched hands.

Overall I was quite happy with how the final design came out, as was the client. I had a great time working on this poster and Dom from Living Daylights Pictures was a pleasure to work with. I am quite the film buff myself and have always had a love for movie poster designs, so this was a great project to design for. Hopefully I’ll have updates on the film soon (you can always visit www.livingdaylights.org for more info) and I wish Dom the best of luck with this film!

It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally here, the new and improved completely redesigned truzweb.com. I have been wanting to give this site a make-over for a while now, but I finally had the chance to make the changes I’ve been wanting to make for a long time now. The main motivation was to really update my existing site to include a portfolio presence for myself. You can actually see a screen cap of the old site just to the left of this post. The old version of truzweb.com was really just a place for my blog and podcast, but I realized that the work I was producing was quickly piling up with no place to showcase it.

So instead of just shoe-horning the portfolio into the old site, I decided to redesign with a more portfolio-centric look. The blog will still be a big part of this site as will the Podcast section in the sidebar. While I will continue to write new blog posts periodically, the podcast is on a bit of a hiatus right now. Maybe one day we’ll get that itch to kick-start it up again, but for now you can enjoy the archives of both shows hosted by truzweb.com.

So please, browse the portfolio and enjoy the new site! Look forward to new blog posts about design, film, food, pop culture, and anything random that pops into my brain. This is truzweb, and I am Truz! Thanks for visiting!

    Jobs Presents

Having gone to college and now currently making my way through graduate school, there is one thing I know that is absolutely true. Always present first!

We all know that sometime throughout our academic and professional careers we are going to at some point have to do some form of public speaking. Some people HATE presenting in front of a crowd, I personally do not mind it too much. However, I love going first! I feel like it lets you set the tone for your own presentation and not be judged against the others who went before you. As well, if you don’t like speaking, it’s always great to go first and get it out of the way. It’s like ripping off a band-aid, and once it’s done you can sit back and relax while the other wait their turn.

In a recent class I had the misfortune of giving a group presentation dead last. We were the last group to go, and I feel we suffered because of it. This was made worse due to the fact that everyone was presenting on the same exact topic. That’s right, no variety here. Every person in the class sat as the groups regurgitated the same exact information, over and over again. There were some subtle differences but most of the stuff was more or less the same.

    Doodles

To the Left, you can see my notebook doodles as I wait my turn. By the time we were ready to present, everything had already been stated ad nauseam, and the room was filled with tired eyes. Luckily I had designed quite the snazzy presentation using a tool called PREZI. It looked great and we had some good content to back it up, but going last really put a damper on a great presentation we had prepared.

Lesson of the story, don’t ever present last!

Lebron and the Heat as the nWoI know it’s the start of football season right now, but the NBA preseason begins next month, and I cannot remember a more anticipated season. Obviously everyone is waiting for the debut of the brand new super power, the Miami Heat. Thinking about 3 big names in the game joining together, has me thinking about another 3 man super power from another “sport”.

That’s right, the nWo or New World Order. The ultimate heel (read: bad guys) trio ever to step foot in the squared circle. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall joined forces with Hulk Hogan, in what was the biggest heel turn in wrestling history. With the Heat becoming everybody’s new favorite team to hate, I feel the parallels between James, Bosh, Wade, and the nWo are astounding. They are THE bad guys of the NBA, and everyone is going to pack the seat to see them play. Just like people did in the 90′s for the nWo.

I think it is going to be quite the interesting season, which is why I felt I had to make this post. Also I was bored and wanted to make a silly photoshop image. All I know is that I’ll be watching when the heat  play there opening game against Boston on October 26th. Maybe they’ll get Mean Gene Okerlund to go back stage and have Lebron and friends cut a promo. After the “Summer Heat Welcome Party” at American Airlines Arena a few months back… I wouldn’t put it past them.

I’ve always wanted to have my current album art displayed on my desktop in a cool way, and I think I’ve finally got it down. With the newest version of iTunes, you can click to album art in the bottom left hand corner and it will pop out it its own separate window. It displays the album art of the current track, and provides playback controls when you hover over it. It can be resized and moved around anywhere on the desktop.

What I have decided to do was create a desktop wallpaper featuring  some of the album covers from my iTunes library. Then I left a space blank in the bottom right hand corner of the wallpaper, so that the iTunes album art window could be placed there. It actually looks like it is apart of the wallpaper, because it rests right on top of the designated space. Then when the track changes or I skip tracks (via keyboard controls or iTunes controls) the album art changes. It is a cheap little trick, that makes the wallpaper look like it is dynamic when it actually is not. Check the video embedded at the top of this post for a brief explanation and example of what this looks like. It’s a pretty cool little effect, and is dirt simple to achieve. Just make your own wallpaper, and designate a space for your album art.

Below you can download the wallpaper I have created, however if you aren’t into the same type of music I am, you probably won’t want it. If that’s the case, go ahead and get creative with your own album art wallpaper and use this neat little iTunes trick!
